Another Chance Of Ohio
For this week’s Worthwhile Wednesday, I wanted to take a moment to recognize Another
Chance of Ohio. This is one of those organizations that really made me stop and think about what it means to help people. Sometimes we hear “second chance” and automatically think it must be some huge opportunity that completely changes someone’s life. But sometimes it is not. Sometimes a second chance looks like having a piece of furniture when you’re starting over, getting a coat when you don’t have one, finding a household item you need but simply can’t afford, getting connected to a resource, or having someone answer the phone and say, “Yes, we can help.”
Another Chance of Ohio has been doing that kind of work in the Cleveland area, providing donated clothing, furniture, appliances, housewares, toys, housing assistance, and other resources to people who need support. What makes this one especially meaningful to me is that the organization has helped an associate connected to me, and its impact continues to reach people within the broader network around us. Sometimes you do not realize how much an organization is doing until the work reaches someone you know. That personal connection reminded me that behind every service, every donation, every referral, and every resource is a real person who may be going through something we know nothing about.
You never really know what somebody is carrying behind the scenes. Someone could be trying to start over after a difficult situation. Someone could be trying to make a house feel like home. Someone could be struggling financially and just need a few basic things to get through the next step. And sometimes having somewhere to go for help can make all the difference. I also think there is something really important about the way community support works. It doesn’t always happen directly. Sometimes it happens because one person knows about an organization and passes the information along. Someone makes a referral. Someone shares a phone number. Someone tells a friend, “Try reaching out here.” That connection can eventually reach someone who really needed it. That’s the kind of impact that can be easy to overlook because it is not always loud or visible. Some organizations are just quietly doing the work, helping people where they can, and giving people a little more to work with when life gets hard. And I think that deserves appreciation. Needing help doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Life happens. Circumstances change. People go through seasons they never expected to be in, and sometimes you just need somebody or something to help you get back on
your feet. A second chance can be a lot of things. It can be furniture. It can be a coat. It can be a household item. It can be housing assistance. It can be a referral. It can be a person who takes the time to listen and point you somewhere that can help. We may look at those things and think they’re small, but to the person receiving them, they may be anything but small. So today, I’m giving some appreciation to Another Chance of Ohio and the people behind the work they continue to do. I’m grateful for organizations that remind us that helping people move forward doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes it starts with simply being willing to help.
And sometimes one small bit of help is exactly what someone needs to believe they can keep going.
